Proposal · prepared for Bagnall and Kirkwood · 18 May 2026

A few specific fixes for bagnallandkirkwood.co.uk.

Bagnall and Kirkwood · Newcastle upon Tyne · website rebuild

I rebuild small-business sites in my spare time when I can see they are leaving conversions on the table. Three things stood out on a careful read of bagnallandkirkwood.co.uk on mobile and desktop. Three findings below, then a working rebuild you can click through at /preview/.

What the current site is leaving on the bench.

A walk-through of the live bagnallandkirkwood.co.uk, read on mobile and desktop on 18 May 2026.

01

The browser tab title is a literal leading dash with no descriptor.

What I saw
The current bagnallandkirkwood.co.uk homepage ships a <title> element that reads "- Bagnall and Kirkwood": a literal hyphen, a space, then the business name. Google reads that string for the SERP listing. Every Newcastle angler who bookmarks the site sees the same broken string in their tab strip. The Yoast meta description below it also carries a typo, "Air RIfles" with a capital I, which has propagated into the og:description that gets shared on Facebook and WhatsApp.
The rebuild
After rebuild: <title> reads "Bagnall and Kirkwood, Newcastle, since 1935. Fishing, shooting and country sports on Rothbury Terrace." Google SERP and every bookmarked tab finally name the trade, the city and the year. The Air RIfles typo is corrected at source.
02

A 175-year lineage from W.R. Pape never reaches the homepage.

What I saw
The /our-history page on the live site documents a verifiable trade lineage that very few Newcastle retailers can match. William Rochester Pape held British Patent 1501 of 1866 for choke-boring shotgun barrels, a foundational mechanical patent in modern shotgun design, and won the Field newspaper ten-guinea prize in 1875 as the acknowledged originator of the technique. Bagnall and Kirkwood took the Westgate Road shop on in 1935. The Guthrie family has run it since 1954, with three Guthrie directors now on the Companies House register. None of this surfaces on the homepage. The current Open Graph share image is the generic "Spares" banner.
The rebuild
After rebuild: a heritage band reading 1850s → 1866 patent → 1935 → 1954 → 2026 sits above the fold. The og:image becomes a representative interior or storefront image rather than a faded spares banner. Person schema on Alan Scott Guthrie and a foundedDate of 1935 anchor the lineage in machine-readable form.
03

No LocalBusiness or Store schema, so "near me" search has nothing to anchor.

What I saw
A crawl of the homepage surfaces a Yoast schema graph containing only WebPage, ImageObject, BreadcrumbList and WebSite. There is no LocalBusiness, no Store, no Organization with name, address, telephone, openingHours or geo coordinates. For a single-location Heaton bricks-and-mortar shop trying to win "gun shop Newcastle", "fishing tackle North East" or "airgun specialist Tyne and Wear" search traffic, the absence of structured data routes those searches to chain retailers and price-comparison aggregators that have it.
The rebuild
After rebuild: Organization plus LocalBusiness Store schema with the 220 Rothbury Terrace postal address, E.164 telephone, opening hours and the Trustpilot 4.4 aggregate rating. Service schema on the four lines of trade. FAQPage schema on the four most-asked customer questions. Google rich snippets and AI search assistants begin citing Bagnall and Kirkwood on North East gun-and-tackle queries within weeks.

The close
